This Handmade Cornish Gin Has Been Named The Best Gin In The World

A self taught young distiller from North Cornwall, has been awarded world’s best gin title at the San Francisco world spirits competition 2017 for his gin called Tarquin’s Cornish Navy Sea dog.

Expert judges blind tasted 268 entries from around the globe and chose the gin created by south-western distillery as Best in show. The award winner, Tarquin’s Cornish Navy gin, is bottled at 57% ABV and was launched in 2016 as a limited edition gin to commemorate the disbanding of Cornwall’s Royal navy rescue Squadron, 771.

The competition is one of the most respected and influential spirit contests and is deemed the Oscars of the spirits world. Master distiller and founder Tarquin Leadbetter said:

“We’re so proud that our tiny distillery, on the far-flung coast of North Cornwall, can compete on the international stage against multinationals and global giants and come out on top”.

The 29-year-old self-taught distiller, started making craft gin six years ago at his home in Cornwall using rustic equipment and selling it commercially to pubs in the area from the boot of his car in 2013. Tarquin now exports his Artisan gin to over a dozen countries worldwide.

His organically grown micro distillery based near Padstow produces small batches of 300 bottles at a time which are all distilled with Cornish water, infused with fresh orange zest and local violets which gives it its unique aromatic flavour.

Tarquin’s gin was one of the first new gins to be distilled in the south-west for over 100 years and was inspired by the wild Cornish coast. This bold and zesty gin became very popular and sold out instantly, it is now part of south-western distillery’s permanent collection alongside the flagship Tarquin’s Cornish gin.

Traditional hand finished and distilling methods are used to make the gin as well as increased botanicals to balance and maintain the alcohol strength and flavour. The award-winning gin boasts a superbly smooth finish with notes of cracked black pepper, rich spice and candied citrus giving it a gorgeous, rounded sweetness.

Both gins created by Tarquin Leadbetter and his Cornish distillery are available nationwide and from independent retailers as well as online via Amazon. Have you tried it? What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments section!
