Set in the centre of a beautiful sweeping bay, the beach at Porthleven is a focal point for tourists and locals alike and makes for a very relaxing location.
Porthleven has one of the most impressive harbours in Cornwall, being constructed with the aid of French prisoners of war during Napoleonic times.
To this day small fishing boats land their daily catch in Porthleven, much of which is sold in the local cafes and restaurants and of course – the award winning Quayside fishmongers.Around the harbour there are buildings with a wide and varied history – many built around 200 years ago when the harbour was created.
You will find many palm trees in this beautiful location – the temperate climate in this area of Cornwall is due to warm waters of the Gulf Stream.
Due to the strict conservation measures Porthleven in Cornwall remains an unspoilt, working harbour.
What to do in Porthleven?
Activities include local boat trips, fishing trips and kayaking, all from the harbour.
Very popular locally. Rare Cornish Choughs have been spotted near the coastal path around Beacon Crag, just outside the village. The freshwater lake, Loe Bar, is also a very popular site for birdwatchers.
There are great costal path walks in both directions. The area caters for walkers, strollers and stompers of all abilities.
